Video: Seven minutes of Halo: Reach Firefight | Joystiq

The headline says it all: there’s new footage of the Halo: Reach Firefight mode courtesy of Halo Waypoint. Keep an eye out for surprises like the return of the bubble shield. We also noticed that drop ships seem to appear on the HUD — possibly after being marked by other players a la Battlefield.
While watching, [...]

SOE’s Laralyn McWilliams talks girls and gaming

Game industry veteran and Sony Online Entertainment senior producer Laralyn McWilliams recently sat down to answer a few questions in an interview with the G.I.R.L. blog’s Emily Taylor. McWilliams, instrumental in the development of SOE’s Free Realms and now working on a new (and unannounced) social game, talks about everything from her current work, to [...]

Pre-order Monkey Island 2 on Steam, get the first one free | Joystiq

We’ve devised a fool-proof plan for getting games at zero cost on Steam: just wait for the next game in the series to come out, and pre-order said sequel. It’s an offer Steam users have no doubt become familiar with in the past and one that’s being extended yet again — anyone who pre-orders Monkey [...]

Etrian Odyssey 3 trailer: like you’ve never heard Etrian Odyssey before | Joystiq

The trailer for Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City demonstrates the kind of stories you can create, with typical in-game experiences described as real adventures by the game’s characters. It also makes us glad the series doesn’t have voice acting. The seafaring dungeon RPG will be in stores September 21.

China’s Ministry of Culture to introduce stricter gaming regulations

The Chinese Ministry of Culture is tightening gaming restrictions in what they say is an effort to protect minors from undesirable content in gaming. “Unwholesome” and “inappropriate” were the words used, and games targeting minors will be required to avoid such content beginning August 1st.
Pornography, cults, superstitions, gambling and violence were some of the themes [...]

Mafia II trailer has nothing to do with friendship

Download HD Video

Mafia II is a facsinating game. Not because it is an open-world crime game, of which there are plenty, but because it focuses more on semi-realism. This realism extends to the gritty, gangster-ridden plot, and that’s just what this trailer from E3 shows off. With executions, explosions, and plenty of in-game cutscenes, it [...]

OnLive’s pricing structure for games revealed

As we mentioned in our first hands-on impressions article for the newly launched OnLive streaming PC game service, the games that are currently available to play on OnLive have a variety of pricing structures ranging from full purchases to being able to rent the game for a few days. For those of you who love [...]

Patch 3.3.5: Servers coming online

It looks like the long wait may be over, as US servers appear to be slowly coming back online from a lengthy extended maintenance. For now the list of servers up is small, and there’s been no official confirmation from Blizzard as to whether or not the downtime is over — however most servers that [...]

NintendoWare Weekly: Art Style: Rotozoa, Bearsworth Manor | Joystiq

Nintendo follows up a thrilling E3 with something that it didn’t mention much at the show: WiiWare and DSiWare. A new Art Style game leads the offerings on WiiWare, joined by two of Square Enix’s weirdest games in recent memory — two games about tossing paper bears underhand.
Read more about these games, along with [...]

Preview: The Sly Collection | Joystiq

With an HD compilation of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus sadly nowhere to be found at E3, we could still find solace in the fact that three of the PS2’s best action-platformers — the Sly Cooper trilogy — are being “remastered” for release on PS3 as The Sly Collection. Sanzaru Games, which last worked [...]

Sonic Adventure on PSN and XBLA won’t venture outside of 4:3 aspect ratio | Joystiq

The Xbox Live Arcade versions of both Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure were playable at Sega’s booth, and both still look great, even ten-plus years after their release. However, each game has one issue that keeps the XBLA (and PSN) version from absolute perfection.
In Crazy Taxi’s case, it’s the lack of licensed music and [...]

Drama Mamas: Rowing in opposite directions

Drama Mamas Lisa Poisso and Robin Torres are experienced gamers and real-life mamas – and just as we don’t want our precious babies to be the ones kicking and wailing on the floor of checkout lane next to the candy, neither do we want you to become known as That Guy on your server.
Sometimes [...]

E3 2010: Hands on with Final Fantasy XIV

I only have two words after playing Final Fantasy XIV. CRAB BATTLE!
Ok, so perhaps I have more than two words to say after playing Final Fantasy XIV and interviewing the game’s producer, Hiromichi Tanaka. I was finally able to wrap my mitts around the game here at E3 2010 and experience the meat of the [...]
